MEDIA GUILD HEALTH AND WELFARE PLAN
SUMMARY ANNUAL REPORT

For the Year Ended September 30, 2009

This is a summary of the annual report for fiscal year September 30, 2009 of the Media Guild Health and Welfare Plan. The annual report has been filed with the Internal Revenue Service as required under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).

This Plan's identification number with the Internal Revenue Service is 94-6117834. The Plan provides hospital, medical, drug, dental, vision, and life insurance benefits for covered employees and dependents that are covered by the collective bargaining agreements between various employers and the Northern California Media Workers’ Guild-Typographical/CWA Union.

This report covers the Plan's fiscal year that ended September 30, 2009. During the 2009 fiscal year, the Plan had contracts with Delta Dental Plan and Vision Service Plan to pay claims under the terms of those Plans and with Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., Health Net Health Plan to provide medical-hospital-prescription drug services directly to employees (and dependents) who have selected those plans, and Reliastar to provide life and disability insurance. The total of all premiums paid by the Plan for the year ending September 30, 2009, to the above carriers and agencies was $5,310,357.

Because the contracts with Vision Service, and Delta Dental Plan are so-called "experience-rated" contracts, the premiums' costs are affected by, among other things, the number and size of claims. Of the total premiums paid for the above plan year, the premiums paid under the "experience rated" contracts totaled $658,296.

BASIC FINANCIAL STATEMENT

The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan was $3,688,810 as of September 30, 2009, compared to $4,152,811 as of September 30, 2008. During the plan year the plan experienced a (decrease) in its net assets of ($464,001). This decrease included unrealized appreciation or depreciation in the value of plan assets; that is, the difference between the value of the plan's assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year or the cost of the assets acquired during the year. The plan had total income of $5,709,268 including employer contributions of $3,946,243, employee contributions of $1,487,262, and gains from investments of $275,763.

Plan expenses were $6,173,269. These expenses included $204,616 in administrative expenses and $5,968,653 paid to insurance companies or other carriers for the provision of benefits.
