Guild joins pushback against S.F. officials’ attack on transparency

Guild President Annie Sciacca (Guild Freelancers), Executive Officer Michael Applegate, and
Brothers Thomas Peele (EdSource) and Richard Knee (Freelancers) are helping to lead a
pushback against an attack on government transparency by San Francisco supervisors and Mayor
Daniel Lurie.

Representing the Guild and the Society of Professional Journalists’ Northern California chapter,
they have played major roles in crafting a statement calling on the Board of Supervisors to end
its shutdown of the city’s open-government watchdog panel, the Sunshine Ordinance Task Force,
and blasting Lurie for concealing records that the task force has said are publicly disclosable.
Peele chairs SPJ NorCal’s Freedom of Information Committee. Knee is on that committee and
chairs the Guild’s Legislative and Political Committee.

The 11-member task force has since June been dormant because the board is delaying
appointments to it, thereby blocking it from mustering a simple-majority quorum.

government transparent.
