Guild mourns passing of longtime union leader Charlie Tobias

Charlie Tobias

We are sad to announce the passing of our dear friend and union leader, Charlie Tobias.

Charles L. Tobias, Jr. of San Francisco, CA died May 20, 2023 at the age of 84 and is survived by his wife, Margaret. He retired in 2001 from the office of Typographical Sector President of the Pacific Media Workers Local 39521 and was a member for 61 years (exactly, as he died on the anniversary of his initiation 5/20/1962).

Charlie remained active in the Union and has served as President of the Bay Area Typographical Retirees Club since its inception. He will be sorely missed.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church in San Francisco (2559 40th Ave.), followed by a reception and celebration at the Irish Cultural Center (2700 45th Ave.) from 12:30-4:30.

The Club publication currently in progress will pivot to a memorial issue under the circumstances and remembrances from the membership are welcome.

Fraternally (and sadly),

Jeanie Schultz, Sec-Treas
Bay Area Typographical Retirees Club
