Guild welcomes ASL interpreters from Purple Communications

SAN FRANCISCO _ The Pacific Media Workers Guild would like to welcome the newest members to join our union family: Sign Language Interpreters at Purple Communications.

More than 225 certified American Sign Language interpreters employed at Purple Communications call centers in California, Arizona and Colorado voted Wednesday to unionize, becoming the first video relay service providers to do so. Purple Communications interpreters provide on-site interpreting, video relay, text relay and video remote interpreting services.

“These interpreters are leaders in every sense. They’re bringing some awesome new energy and commitment into our local and TNG-CWA,” said Media Workers Guild executive officer Carl Hall.

The Media Workers already includes the California Federation of Interpreters, the premier interpreters union in The Newspaper Guild-Communications Workers of America. CFI includes more than 900 state court interpreters who work in more than 50 languages. They have been fighting for more than a decade to advance workplace rights for language specialists.

“Our California Federation of interpreters membership has made some amazing gains already, and with these ASL interpreters part of our CWA family, we can build on those achievements and take interpreter advocacy to new levels,” Hall said.
