a. Organizing 

• • Voluntary Recognition won for Daily Kos members, scope of unit is under dispute
  • Two new organizing campaigns running underground + a third on the docket
  • TNG is providing support for the largest of the campaigns. Marian Needham will provide support on applying for a SIF grant to cover partial costs of hiring a full time organizer.
  • Support for open shops – limited funding available from TNG to support organizing drives in our open shops over the next four months

b. Grievance and Arbitration

• • February: Maui News – unilateral move to new building without COVID precautions + HIOSH complaint re: inadequate air conditioning for inserters
  • Feb/ March: East Bay Times – pending issue re: performance evaluations (company is trying to tie their pay to page views)
  • March: Chronicle reclassified nine of our sales members to non-union positions.

c. Bargaining –

• • Modesto Bee successor agreement 
  • Sacramento and Fresno Bee re-openers
  • WFH/ working without an office stipends: East Bay Times and Fresno Bee
  • Chronicle successor agreement – held first member meeting
  • Maui – bargaining on hold
  • Will soon start bargaining prep in Hilo

d. Mobilization

• • Bay New Rising – Bill Snyder will be stepping down from his position as program director. Many thanks to Bill! 
    • Updates re: search for new program director
    • EC/member support on recruitment
    • Probability of getting these things in place in time to get application in 
  • Training Committee Report: draft of 2021 Guild training program

e. Impact of furloughs/ layoffs on the local

• • Local is applying for PPP loans now available to unions

G. Report from Michael Cabanatuan re: International Guild Executive Council Work

H. Report from Legislative and Political Committee Chair, Richard Knee re: 

a. Guild meeting with Senator McGuire’s Office and California SB98

b. Considering letter of support for

1. 1. Andrea Sahouri, Iowa reporter who faces charges of failure to disperse
   2. Effort to require that police officers receive training on how to work with the press. Part of Oakland’s Re-imagining Public Safety project.

2021 MEETING SCHEDULE

Local Executive Committee Meetings are held every third Saturday of the month from 10 am-noon at 433 Natoma St. in San Francisco. All members are encouraged to join and listen in. If you can’t make it in person, please call in by video or phone. The Local Representative Assembly and General Membership meet with the EC every other meeting. Agendas and updates will be posted here at mediaworkers.org.
